Mustard Seeds - metabolism boosters
Mustard seeds are a great way to take advantage of Thermogenesis, where the food you eat boosts your metabolism, and you burn more calories.
To toast them, put a dry skillet or similar frying pan over a medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and stir constantly. The stirring stops you burning the seeds which would ruin the taste and undo the health benefits.
You'll know that they're ready when then become fragrant and turn golden brown.
Use these as a great alternative to croutons or "bacon bits" which add calories to salads. Mustard burns more calories than they add!
You can also try using the seeds in a dressing. Be sure to use Olive oil - a good fat - in the dressing below. (Simple unsaturated fats like Olive oil and flaxseed oil can actually contribute to weight loss if you use them as a replacement for saturated fats.
Toasted Mustard Seed and Orange Dressing
4 tsp. mustard seeds
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 tsp. prepared Dijon mustard
1/8 tsp. minced garlic
2 Tbsp. orange juice
1 tsp. honey
pinch of salt
Place the seeds in a dry saut pan and cook over medium heat, constantly swirling the seeds to avoid burning. When ready (golden brown and fragrant), transfer them to a mortar and grind them coarsely. Combine with the remaining ingredients. Makes 8 servings.
Goes well over salads of red onion, orange segments and spinach, but don't be afraid to experiment!
