My take on the Herbalife program...



As you might be able to detect, I'm quite a fan of the Herbalife Program and philosophy. In fact I use many of their products in coaching my one-to-one clients. You can see here why I have found them to be so effective. That having been said, I don't only view the program through rose-tinted glass. Although there aren't many, you should consider carefully whether this is the program for you.

ON THE POSITIVE SIDE

1. The Herbalife Program gives you Advanced Nutrition.
Of all the weight loss foods available, I consider the Herbalife shakes, when combined with fresh fruits and veg and a healthy "regular meal" to be the most nutritious way of eating possible.

This is especially true in the modern era with its reduced calorie requirements. Our problem is not finding enough food to survive, but in finding enough nutrition without overloading on calories. We're enormously lucky to live in a time of plenty. At the same time, most of us do not do physically-demanding manual work.

Sadly, this combination of plentiful food and sedentary lifestyles leads to overweight. The Herbalife program offers a highly researched and documented alternative to three solid meals per day. Two shakes, fruit and veg snacks and one regular meal per day leads to considerable weight loss, which is also less likely to plateau because your body will not be nutritionally deficient.

Herbalife's research has been sound right since the company started and continues at UCLA under a staff including one of the most respected and highly funded nutritional scientists in the world, Dr. David Heber, and Louis Ignarro, UCLA's Nobel Prize winner for medicine and pharmacology in 1998. Having studied all the options, I know there are no other weight loss companies with that sort of cutting edge research backing them up.


2. Personalised level of protein stops hunger & encourages development of lean muscle tissue.
Protein stops you getting hungry. This was the finding of.... The precise reason is not known, but it's the same reason that causes follwers of the Atkins Diet to lose their appetite, consume fewer calories and lose weight. With the Herbalife program you get the same effect, but with two significant advantages:

i) The extra protein you're consuming is vegetable protein rather than meat protein. This soya protein will not increase your saturated fat intake (as meat products do), but is in fact cholesterol-busting. In addition, soya protein does not burden the kidneys in the way meat proteins do.
ii) you're not banned from getting all the health benefits of fresh fruit and vegetables, as you are for a significant part of the Atkins program. In terms of fruit and veg, the Herbalife program encourages you to eat up to 7 (for women) and 9 (for men) portions per day.


3. There's an effective weight maintenance regime.
Once you've reached your ideal weight, you're psychologically in a difficult place. Most people are terrified at that point that they'll regain the weight. The Herbalife program offers a simple solution - instead of jumping straight back into the over-caloried environment which got you overweight in the first place, simply take one shake/smoothie per day at breakfast time, eat two regular meals, keep up your portions of fruit and veg and you'll protect you're newly found figure.

Since the Herbalife products are purely food (not drugs), there's nothing to stop you continuing with 1 shake a day for as long as you want. It's great for your health and you'll be totally in control of your weight. Once you've maintained your weight successfully I also teach my clients a technique called the 3-3-3, which guarantees you'll keep your weight within 3lbs of your target weight for ever more. It's a fantastic routine that you can follow without affecting your lifestyle for the rest of your life - I have and it's worked for me! How's that for control?



ON THE NEGATIVE SIDE:

1. Although attitudes are changing, people are wary of liquid meals.
Soya or whey based liquid meals have been around since the 1960s when NASA invested heavily in this branch of food technology to feed their astronauts on space flights. Inevitably if you've never tried them or found other brands didn't fill you up or tasted sickly, then you're going to be suspicious that you'll get on with Herbalife.

Remember two things before you dismiss the program, though...

i) You never survive solely on shakes. You have your 7-9 fruit and veg snacks throughout the day, and a full meal at either lunch or dinner. There are also increased-protein chocolate snackbars to have with you if you need something. They won't spoil your weight loss and are genuinely tasty. ii) It's easy to control your hunger with your shakes. All you need to do is add another tablespoon of protein powder. Working with your distributor on regular follow up calls - 3 in the first week - you'll find the right level to beat your hunger.

2. Some distributors aren't great at follow up.
Herbalife is a business to many distributors and unfortunately some of them focus more on the profits than on your results. In recent years Herbalife has increased its level of training to distributors considerably, but you still need to be happy with the distributor you're using. If they don't follow you up consistently or don't know what to say when they do call, you'll be losing out on a crucial part of the Herbalife program - human support.
